The Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra marked the end of an extraordinary chapter in its history on Sunday 14th June 2026 as Michael Lloyd conducted his final concert as Musical Director after 32 years at the helm.
A capacity audience gathered for a landmark performance of Mahler's monumental Symphony No. 2, Resurrection, bringing the orchestra's 2025/26 season to a close. In an emotional conclusion to both the concert and Michael's tenure as Musical Director, the final notes were met with an immediate and spontaneous standing ovation from the entire audience.
The performance provided a fitting finale to a remarkable association that has helped shape the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra for more than three decades.
Michael was appointed Musical Director in 1993 and has since overseen a period of significant artistic growth, leading the orchestra through hundreds of concerts and an extensive repertoire spanning the orchestral canon. Under his leadership, generations of musicians have developed their skills and shared in ambitious performances of some of the world's greatest music.
His influence extends far beyond the concert platform. Through his commitment, musical vision and dedication to amateur music-making at the highest level, Michael has helped establish the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra as one of the country's leading amateur orchestras.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution, the orchestra was delighted to announce at Sunday's concert that Michael has been appointed Conductor Emeritus of the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra.
The honorary title acknowledges his exceptional service and enduring legacy, while ensuring that his connection with the orchestra will continue into the future.
Speaking after the concert, members of the orchestra reflected on Michael's immense contribution over the past 32 years. Many current players joined the orchestra under his leadership, while countless former members have benefitted from his musicianship, encouragement and unwavering commitment to excellence.
The choice of Mahler's Resurrection Symphony for Michael's final concert carried particular significance. Widely regarded as one of the greatest works in the orchestral repertoire, the symphony's themes of renewal, hope and transformation provided a poignant backdrop to an occasion that celebrated both an ending and a new beginning.
As the orchestra bids farewell to Michael as Musical Director, it does so with immense gratitude for his years of service and the lasting impact he has made on the organisation.
The Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra now looks forward to a new chapter under the leadership of incoming Music Director Jack Lovell-Huckle, who takes up the position in September.
While a new era begins, Michael Lloyd's influence on the orchestra will continue to be felt for many years to come, and all at the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra are delighted that he will remain part of the organisation as Conductor Emeritus.
The orchestra extends its sincere thanks to Michael for 32 years of inspirational leadership, outstanding musicianship and unwavering dedication to the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra.
