Percussion
Outside of BPO, what is your occupation?
Chemistry student at University of Birmingham and swimming teacher
How long have you been a member of BPO?
Played with the BPO since 2021
What inspired you to take up your instrument?
I loved playing piano and my music teacher at school introduced me to tuned percussion as a similar instrument. From there I branched out into all areas of percussion/timpani and haven’t looked back since! Now I play in orchestras and brass bands and really enjoy learning new repertoire.
How did you come to join the orchestra?
I joined BPO when I moved to Birmingham and wanted to join a good orchestra outside of my uni ensembles. BPO gave me the opportunity to play new repertoire and meet other musicians who I otherwise wouldn’t have played with and learnt from.
Most treasured occasion with the BPO?
Playing Mahler 7 in Leominster Priory Church with team percussion.
Any moments you would rather forget?
Throwing my timp stick in the middle of a concert and having to subtly pick up another one and keep playing.
Favourite composer? Least favourite composer?
Favourite composer: either Bernstein - purely for West Side Story or Mahler for timpani parts that are great fun, Prokofiev. To listen to would be Tchaikovsky.
Least favourite composer: anyone that makes percussion wait all piece to play then puts one quiet note near the end.
Work(s) you would like to play before you die?
Dvorak New World Symphony, Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture, Mahler 6, full planets suite.
