Joanna Smith
How long have you been a member of the BPO?
Since moving to Birmingham in the early 1990s.
What inspired you to take up your instrument?
I already played piano and classical guitar but really wanted to play an instrument where I could join ensembles. I tried out the trumpet first but the clarinet became firm favourite after a few lessons.
How did you come to join the orchestra?
I did a Music Degree at Liverpool Uni and was contemplating a career in music until I realised how difficult it is to join the profession after working at the Philharmonic Hall and getting to know some of the players. I moved to Birmingham when I got offered a position at the CBSO as Publications Officer and wanted to keep music going as a hobby. I don't have the discipline at all to practise unless there's a reason (!) so looked around for orchestras to join and the BPO happened to need a 2nd clarinet.
Most treasured occasion with the BPO?
The first time we played at Symphony Hall - what an acoustic if a little scary!
Any moments you'd rather forget?
Losing a contact lens halfway through a concert!! I'm very short sighted and had to hunt round for it whilst we were on stage in front of the audience!
Favourite composer?
It changes every year - sometimes more frequently and sometimes influenced by the BPO programme.
Least favourite composer?
Sibelius - oh dear - yes I know we are doing a concerto of his this season - a case of grin and bear it!
Work(s) you'd like to play before you die?
Think it would be really exciting if we got the opportunity to do something bit more contemporary (money permitting) - for me I'd love to do anything by Steve Reich, John Adams or Philip Glass.
