Elaine Marson

How long have you been a member of the BPO?
I've been a member of the BPO for 17 years, since 1991

What inspired you to take up your instrument?
I learned how to play the violin and read music whilst at primary school, at the age of 9. My Father used to sing and also has a passion for classical music, so I was influenced by music from an early age. I am always inspired when I see professional violinists perform (especially Maxim Vengerov), and I love the complexity and diversity of the violin, so I am always learning even after all these years of playing!

How did you come to join the orchestra?
When I was about to retire from Sandwell Youth Orchestra at the age of 19, the orchestra's cello teacher told me about the BPO and suggested I apply to join. After initially contacting Ian MacCarthy, I joined the violin section and auditioned with Tony Smith. So it was thanks to Ian and Tony who gave me the opportunity to play with such a wonderful orchestra.

Most treasured occasion with the BPO?
My first concert with the BPO in 1991, at Coventry Cathedral, when we performed 'An Alpine Symphony' by Richard Strauss

Any moments you'd rather forget?
Apart from one, (which I'm not disclosing) I've enjoyed every moment with the BPO and have a lot of happy memories.

Favourite composer?
I can't pick just one favourite, I have too many, which include Elgar, Respighi and Sibelius.

Least favourite composer?
My least favourite is Johann Strauss II, as I feel less inspired with his works.

Work(s) you'd like to play before you die?
'Pines of Rome' by Respighi (which we're performing in 2009 - yeah!) plus all the symphonies by Tchaikovsky.
